The city centre of Chester is surrounded by the Roman Fortress Wall which was built to protect the city from the Welsh. Chester is one of the best preserved walled cities in Britain and the walls are a must see on any visit to the city. You can still walk around the walls with its towers and archways (a 2 mile walk) and get great views of all the different parts of the city and beyond from above.
