What to do in Birmingham

United Kingdom

Traditionally perceived as a dull and drab industrial city; Birmingham has been transformed beyond recognition in recent years. Significant investment has allowed for the development of modern shopping centres, vibrant nightlife venues and highly impressive exhibition spaces. It is still possible to see historical evidence of the WWII bombings and manufacturing centres. However, Birmingham is rapidly developing into one of Britain's finest tourist destinations.

A number of historic buildings have been demolished during the regeneration of Birmingham. However, visitors with a developed interest in history should take the opportunity to tour Aston Hall. You may well enjoy a sunlit walk through the picturesque gardens of this grand Jacobean residence. It might also be tempting to read Washington Irving's intriguing historical account of life in past times. However, you should leave enough time for a tour of Ozzy Ozbourne's first home.

If you're really keen to learn about Birmingham's historical development then it would be worth visiting the central museum and art gallery. The knowledgeable museum staff will be happy to tell you about the range of objects which date back to prehistoric times. You'll also have the opportunity to view an extensive collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings. Alternatively, you could enjoy some chocolaty indulgence at the highly popular Cadbury's world visitor centre.

You might well be eager to sample some of the local food and drink after touring Birmingham's major tourist sites. You'll discover a fantastic selection of real ales at traditional pubs in the heart of the city. The imported Castile Rouge beer is highly recommended. You may also take the opportunity to watch one of the cultural performances at one of Birmingham's historic theatres.

Birmingham has a thriving and exceedingly diverse music scene and full listings can be found in the Ryan's Gig guide publication. You can catch internationally acclaimed performers at major local venues. Alternatively, you may listen to an acoustic performance at one of the dedicated music centres. Whether you want to stay for one week, one month or longer we have a great selection of serviced apartments in Birmingham for you.
