The Castle Keep and Black Gate

I Want To Go Here I've Been Here

The Castle of Newcastle Upon Tyne, which gave the city its name, was originally built in 1080 and later rebuilt between 1168 and 1178.

The Castle Keep and the Black Gate are the two most prominent structures remaining of the original building, and have become a popular heritage site for the city.

The keep itself is one of the UK’s best examples of a Norman keep, with the Black Gate an unusual designed barbican, allowing an advantageous view of the whole western wall and ditch of the castle.

Both the Castle Keep and the Black Gate have long been managed by the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne, the second oldest antiquarian society in the world.

Guided tours are available with a number of events taking place throughout the year, including ghost hunts.

The Castle Keep and Black Gate are located in the Castle Garth area of Newcastle Upon Tyne.  Open most days Monday – Saturday 10am – 5pm and Sunday 12 – 5pm.
