The largest of the South Oxfordshire towns, Didcot is 10 miles south of Oxford and is a great place to visit.
Didcot has been an important part of our railway heritage, ever since Isambard Kingdom Brunel built a railway station in 1844 that turned the rural hamlet into the town it is today. It still has fantastic rail links to Oxford 10 minutes away, Reading 20 minutes and London only 45 minutes away. The best place to find out about the impact the railway has had on the town is at the Didcot Railway Centre. You can see the history of Victorian technology brought to life with steam engines, coaches and wagons, as well as a museum and trips on Thomas the Tank Engine. The Railway Centre has such a unique collection of locomotives that it is frequently used in films and has even attracted Hollywood stars through its doors.
The best place to see a film is at The Orchard Centre which boasts a cinema and entertainment centre as well as over 30 shops and restaurants, so you can get your fun, fashion and food all in one place. There is also 2 hours free parking and enough parking for 500 cars – correct at the time of writing. For even more entertainment the Cornerstone Arts Centre provides a wide variety of events with theatre; shows; comedy; music; dance and art exhibitions throughout the year. See www.cornerstone-arts.org for up-to-date listings.
If you’re keen to get out and about then there are several large parks and play areas in Didcot, such as Edmonds Park and Ladygrove Park where you can find play areas and fishing lakes. The Millennium Wood is well worth a visit, with a range of deciduous trees and a stone circle and this can be seen as part of the Hagbourne Triangle cycle route. For a perfect picnic spot go to Mowbray Fields, a nature reserve in the heart of Didcot, a haven for wildlife and wild flowers and where you can spot Red Kites all year round.
Didcot Wave Leisure Centre has something for all the family with a pool, wave machine, indoor flume machine and beach area as well as a large well equipped gym and sports centre. At the Didcot Leisure Centre there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Whether you’re planning a trip to Didcot for work or leisure our apartments offer a great base from which to explore the area.
