Climate/Weather

Madrid has a continental Mediterranean climate making it cool in winter and hot in summer. Due to the city’s altitude nightly temperatures tend to be cooler and precipitation levels are quite low although rain is to be expected all year round especially during spring and autumn.


Sightseeing

Madrid is a vibrant city with much on offer to see and do. Here are some of the highlights:
•    The Golden Triangle – Madrid’s three most famous art galleries – Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen Borno – form the famous Golden Triangle and are linked by the Paseo del Arte (Art Walk).
•    Palacio Real (Royal Palace) – the enormous palace is one of the most emblematic and beautiful building not just of Madrid but of Spain also.
•    Plaza Mayor – this impressive square is the best known in Madrid and is a definite must-see on any trip to the city.
•    Puerta del Sol – this plaza is the real heart of Madrid and here you can find the famous statue of a bear climbing a strawberry tree – the symbol of Madrid.


Getting Around

Madrid boasts an efficient, comprehensive transport network that covers the whole city centre.
•    Metro – modern, clean, efficient and extremely good value the 12 lines of the metro cover most of the city.
•    Bus – with approximately 200 routes the bus network covers where the metro doesn’t.
•    Train – 12 lines link the city with neighbouring towns and cities.


Eat/Drink

Like most major European cities, Madrid offers a vast array of gastronomic delights ranging from traditional Spanish fare to international cuisine. There are many local specialities that are well worth a try:
•    Sopa de Ajo – a rich and oily garlic soup generally served with paprika, shredded Spanish ham, fried bread and a poached egg.
•    Cocido Madrileno – chickpea stew with meat and vegetables – all served and eaten separately.
•    Callos a la Madrilena – hot pot with spicy beef tripe.
•    Oreja de Cerdo – pigs ear fried in garlic.
•    Seafood – ironically Madrid, located inland nowhere near the sea, has some of the best seafood in Spain. Delicious in paella.
•    Chocolate con Churros – fried, crispy non-sweet dough served with a thick chocolate drink. Popular with at breakfast or as an afternoon snack in winter.
•    Sangria – the famous red wine punch.
•    Beer – Mahou is a popular beer made in Madrid.
•    Cava – sparkling wine.
