• Bicycle – hiring a bike is a must on a trip to Amsterdam - whether you brave the cycle traffic in the city centre or take a leisurely ride further afield – it’s a great way to see the sights.
• Tram – networks cover the whole city with all trams departing from Centraal Station.
• Metro – the four Metro lines serve the suburbs and business districts.
• Bus – reach all the places the trams don’t.
• Water – ferries, canal buses, canal taxis and canal bikes (pedalos) - all great ways to get around this city of canals.
Eat/Drink
As a hugely cosmopolitan city, Amsterdam offers cuisine form all over the world. However, there is a variety of traditional Dutch culinary delights that are well worth a try:
• Cheese – the North Holland region produces some of the Netherlands’ finest cheeses -notably Edam and Gouda- available in cafés all over the city or hand-crafted at a range of markets.
• Beer – sample some authentic Grolsch or Heineken.
• Vlaamse Frites (fries) – delicious and especially good dipped in mayonnaise.
• Stroopwafels (syrup waffles) – exceedingly rich and a must for anyone with a sweet tooth. Pick them up at a local shop or freshly made and still warm at the Albert Cuyp Markt.
