Did You Know?
According to legend Rome was founded by brothers Romulus and Remus who were raised by a she-wolf in a cave on Palatine Hill. Today, the emblem of Rome is picture of the two brothers with the wolf.
Climate/Weather
Rome benefits from a warm Mediterranean climate. Autumn and spring can be quite balmy while the summer is generally hot and sticky.
Sightseeing
With such a long and fascinating history Rome is awash with historic sights and attractions many of which need no introduction:
• Colosseum – the large amphitheatre in the centre of the city is one of the greatest examples of Roman architecture and engineering.
• Palatine Hill – is one of the most ancient parts of the city.
• The Arch of Constantine – the triumphal arch is situated between the Colosseum and Palatine Hill.
• Pantheon – a complete Roman temple preserved as a church.
• Piazza Navona – the stadium sized square in the heart of Rome.
• Vatican City – home of the Pope, the Roman Catholic Church and some of the most impressive churches, museums and architecture in the world.
Getting Around
Although Rome is a large city the historic centre is relatively compact making it easy to navigate on foot. However, the city has a comprehensive transport network:
• Bus – is probably the most convenient way to travel around the city bar walking. All of the major sights and attractions are linked by bus routes and maps of the bus network are available all over the city. Although reliable, buses can be crowded.
• Metro – Rome has two metro lines crossing through Termini station (the transport centre of the city). Line A runs past the Vatican and Line B runs via the Colosseum. The Metro is punctual and reliable but can be crowded during rush hour.
• Tram – a scenic way to travel, routes mostly skirt the historic centre but there are stops convenient for the Vatican and Trastevere area.
Eat/Drink
Italy is famous the world over for its delicious food and fine wines and Rome doesn’t disappoint. There are a number of things that must be tried on any trip to this ancient city:
• Coffee – make like the locals and enjoy a swift espresso in the sun in one of the many outdoor cafés dotted about the city.
• Gelato (ice cream) – you will be overwhelmed by the choice of flavours available. Opt for panna (whipped cream) on top for an extra treat. A good tip is to look for the “G” sign outside gelateria as this means it has a guild association and will be good quality.
• Wine – opt for the house wine – they are very affordable and extremely delicious.
