Sightseeing

Although Shenzhen doesn’t boast the historic sights of Beijing and Xian there is plenty to see and do in the city. Here are some of the highlights:

•    Window of the World – one of Shenzhen’s many theme parks this is possibly the most famous. Here you will find scale models of iconic sights from all over the world including the Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal and Grand Canyon as well as lush gardens and grand dance shows.

•    Splendid China and Chinese Folk Culture Village – there are two different sections at this theme park. The first section is a miniature park of China where you can see the Forbidden City, the terracotta soldiers, Tibet Potala Palace and the Great Wall of China. The second part consists of 56 houses to represent the 56 nationalities of China including the Miao, Yi, Bai and Mongol.

•    Happy Valley Theme Park – this classic theme park offers all the usual rides.

•    Lianhua Mountain Park – this beautiful and meticulously maintained park is the most central in Shenzhen.

•    Lake of the Immorals Botanical Gardens – the most beautiful park in Shenzhen and one of the most breathtaking in China.

Getting Around

Shenzhen offers a number of options for getting around the city:

•    Metro – there are currently two lines in operation in the city although additional lines are under construction. Shenzhen’s metro network is the most convenient and easy to use transport option.

•    Taxi – metered taxis are readily available.

•    Bus – local services run almost everywhere and provide a comfortable way to get around. Signs are usually written in Romanised Chinese but announcements are in Mandarin and English.

Eat/Drink

Shenzhen is a melting pot of authentic cuisine from provinces all around China including spicy fare from Sichuan, cold dishes of the north east and preserved ham from Hunan province. There is some cuisine that is well worth a try:

•    Morning tea – Shenzhen’s morning tea has held the honour of being the best in all of China for some time. Enjoying a cup of tea with delicious dim sum at a leisurely pace (lasting anything up until lunchtime) is what makes it special in Shenzhen.

•    Yanjuji – salt baked chicken.

•    Niangdoufu – stuffed bean curd.

•    Hongshaorou – braised pork with soy sauce.
