Average temperatures range between 21°c and 32°c (69-89°f) during the summer months and between 1°c and 11°c (34-52°f). Spring tends to be extremely pleasant but changeable and autumn tends to be sunny and dry.

Sightseeing

There is a great variety of things to see and do in Shanghai with something to suit every taste and timetable. Here are some of the highlights:

•    The Bund – this mile long waterfront strip is home to an array of impressive stately colonial buildings. Enjoy a stroll along the bund and gaze over the river at Shanghai’s futuristic skyline of the Pudong.

•    Pudong – home to the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Jin Mao Tower and the rest of Shanghai’s iconic skyscrapers.

•    Nanjing Road – this pedestrian only boulevard is the world’s longest shopping district.

•    French Concession – this attractive area is home to beautiful old buildings, art galleries, outdoor café bars and boutiques.

•    Yu Gardens and Bazaar – the historic downtown area offers a taste of traditional Shanghai.

Getting Around

Shanghai benefits from an extensive and efficient transport network which makes getting around incredibly easy.

•    Metro – clean, efficient and easy to navigate. There are currently 11 lines in operation around the city centre and signs and announcements are in both Mandarin and English.

•    Taxi – taxis are in abundance in Shanghai and are affordable to use as fares are set by the government.

•    Maglev – Shanghai is home to the world’s first commercial high speed maglev railway which links the Longyang Road metro station with Pudong International Airport.

•    Ferry – running between the Bund and the Lujiazui financial district on the Pudong this is the cheapest and most scenic way of crossing the river.

•    Pedestrian Transit Tunnel – a more fun way of travelling between the Bund and the Pudong. Slow moving vehicles travel through a tunnel beneath the Huangpu River and passengers are presented with an interesting light show.

Eat/Drink

Shanghai fare is essentially a fusion of cuisine from the surrounding Jiangnan region. Here are a few examples of what you can expect:

•    Xiaolongbao – these delicious steamed dumplings are probably the most famous Shanghai delicacy. Small steamed buns are filled with a tasty meat broth and are eaten by biting a small hole in the top, sipping the broth then dipping the bun in dark vinegar to season the meat.

•    Sheng Jian Bao – fried buns that are larger than the xiaolongbao and are crisp underneath. Popular for breakfast accompanied by vinegar.

•    Shanghai Mao Xie – Shanghai hairy crab. In season in the winter months.

•    Beer – local brews include Snow and Pearl River.
