Climate/Weather
Beijing has a humid subtropical climate with hot humid summers and cold, dry winters. Spring and autumn are usually crisp and sunny. The average temperatures during the summer months range between 19°c and 31°c (66-88°f) whilst winter temperatures are usually between 4°c and -8°c (39-17°f).

• The Forbidden City – follow in the footsteps of the emperors of old in the best preserved group of ancient buildings in China.
• Summer Palace – another of Beijing’s World Heritage Sites this impressive palace and gardens is also home to the famous Long Corridor.
• Tiananmen Square – the largest public square in the world is home to the Mao Zedong Memorial Hall, the Great Hall of the People – the parliament of China – and leads on to the Forbidden City.
• Temple of Heaven – one of the most beautiful sights in the city.
• The Great Wall of China – Beijing acts as a great base for visiting the iconic Great Wall.
Getting Around
There are a number of options for getting around Beijing:
• Subway – Beijing’s subway system consists of seven main lines and offers a fast, cheap and efficient way to get around. There is also a light rail line and the ABC (Airport to Beijing City) line which connects the airport with the Dongzhimen and Sanyuanqiao stations in the centre of the city. Signs and announcements are in both Chinese and English.
• Taxi – taxis are plentiful in Beijing and can be found waiting outside major department stores, hotels and train stations or can be hailed on the street. It is advisable to have your destination written down in Chinese as it is unlikely that the driver will speak English.
• Bus – it is advised that tourists avoid using the bus systems unless you have a strong grasp of Mandarin.
Eat/Drink
There are a number of delicious local delicacies in Beijing that are a must try for every visitor:
• Peking Duck or Beijing Roast Duck – this world famous dish can be found in many restaurants in the city, from budget to high end, as well as a number of restaurants specialising in the dish. The roasted duck is served with a thin pancake, plum sauce and strips of spring onion and cucumber.
• Hot Pot – this popular dish is a steaming pot of spiced broth where you cook raw ingredients yourself. Ingredients are bought by the plate and typically include a range of meats, mutton is the Beijing speciality, vegetables, noodles and tofu. A dipping oil, usually sesame, is also served.
• Street snacks – a whole range of grilled, fried and barbecued snacks are available from vendors all over the city. Delicacies include lamb kebabs, silk worms and scorpions.
• Tea – experience different styles of tea ceremonies and tea tastings for the true experience.
• Beer – Tsingtao is the most famous beer in China and Yanjing is Beijing’s local brew.
