Climate/Weather

Brussels, like most of Western Europe, has a pleasant temperate climate with warm summers and mild winters.

Sightseeing

Brussels is more than the home of the European Parliament and has much to offer with something to suit every interest, taste and timetable:

•    Grand Place – a must see on any trip to the city. Marvel at the ornate guild houses, admire the magnificent Town Hall and absorb the buzzing atmosphere in what is possibly the most beautiful square in Europe.

•    Manneken-Pis – a small bronze statue of a urinating boy, said to represent the “irreverent spirit” of Brussels. If you’re lucky you may even see the statue dressed up in one of his several hundred costumes.

•    Atomium – the 335ft (102 metre) tall representation of an atomic unit cell. Made up of nine steel balls, the windows of the top sphere offer stunning panoramic views of the city.

•    Museums – the city boasts over 90 museums – some internationally renowned and some small and quaint.

Getting Around

Brussels boasts an efficient and comprehensive transport system:

•    Metro – with six lines that cross the city. Identified by a blue sign with a white “M”.

•    Trams – identified by red signs. Trams serve the city centre and suburbs.

•    Premetro – trams that run under and over ground.

•    Bus – connect the whole of the city and suburbs. Identified by white signs.

•    Bicycle – a great way to see the city is on a bike tour. Ideal for those short on time as Brussels can be easily explored in just four hours.

Eat/Drink

Belgian cuisine is said to be some of the best in Europe with a number of local specialities a must try when visiting Brussels:

•    Chocolate – a trip to the chocolate capital of the world wouldn’t be complete without sampling a truffle or two.

•    Beer – beer means to Belgium what wine means to France. Try special Brussels’ beer such as Kriek (cherry beer) or Lambic (a distinctive, slightly sour brew).

•    Waffles (gauffre) – try a Brussels’ waffle – thick, square shaped and topped with sugar, fruit or cream or a Gauffre de Liège/ Liukse Wafel – waffle covered with caramelised sugar.

•    Fries (frites) – Belgium is the home of the fry.

•    Mussels (Moules) – a Belgian speciality.

•    Anguilles au Vert / Paling in’t Groen (river eels in green sauce) – for those more adventurous diners.

•    Turbot Waterzooi (turbot fish in cream and egg sauce).
