History

It is believed that the area of Sydney has been inhabited by indigenous Australian for more than 30,000 years. In 1770 British sea captain Lieutenant James Cook landed on the Kurnell Peninsula in Botany Bay and later in 1788 a convict settlement was founded at Port Jackson named after the British Home Secretary Thomas Townshend - Lord Sydney. Roads, bridges and public buildings were soon constructed and by 1822 the town had banks, markets, major thoroughfares and an organised constabulary. The 1830s and 40s saw a period of urban development with the creation of the first suburbs and on the 10th July 1842 the town was declared the first city of Australia. 1851 saw the first of several Australian gold rushes which led to waves of people arriving from all over the world. During the last quarter of the 19th century Sydney experienced rapid suburban development with the introduction of steam powered tramways and railways and following Industrialisation the city expanded further having a population of more than a million people by the early 20th century. Sydney today is the largest city in Australia, the capital of New South Wales and is one of the most multicultural and most liveable cities in the world.
