The home of the car and one of the wealthiest cities in Germany, Stuttgart is a desirable location popular with business travellers, car lovers and city breakers from all over.
History
The first known settlement in the area was around the 1st century AD with the establishment of a Roman fort on the banks of the River Neckar. Stuttgart itself is said to have been founded around 950 AD by Duke Liudolf of Swabia and was used for breeding cavalry horses. Around 1300 Stuttgart was the chosen residence of the Counts of Württemberg then in 1321 was granted city status when it became the official royal residence. In 1495 Stuttgart became the Duchy capital and Ducal residence before becoming the capital of the Kingdom of Württemberg in 1805. The opening of the Hauptbahnhof (main station) in 1846 promoted an economic revival for the city and in 1871 Gottlieb Daimler invented the automobile in a small workshop in the city. Today Stuttgart is the capital of Baden Württemberg, the sixth largest city in Germany and world renowned for its automotive industry.
