Reading is an attractive town in Berkshire, a major retail and commercial centre, and home to two universities. It offers an excellent destination where you can explore historic attractions and the sights of the Thames Valley.

History

The earliest known record of Reading's existence is from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, which records the first Battle of Reading in 871, when King Ethelred and his brother Alfred the Great attacked the occupying Danes there. In the twelfth century, King Henry I founded Reading Abbey, making the town a place of pilgrimage. By the time the abbey was largely destroyed under Henry VIII, Reading was the largest town in Berkshire. In 1688, the second Battle of Reading saw the only significant fighting of the Glorious Revolution which replaced James II with the joint monarchs William and Mary. Reading later became famous for producing the three Bs- Beer, Bulbs and Biscuits, and more recently became a modern commercial centre with a significant presence from technology companies.
