A vibrant, cosmopolitan yet traditional city Munich is a truly fascinating destination that attracts large numbers of tourists, business travellers and beer enthusiasts every year.

History

Munich, or München in German, derives from the Old German word Mönche meaning monks which refers to the settlement of Benedictine monks who founded the city in the 8th century. First reference to Munich was in a document dated 1158. By 1175 the city was fortified and granted city status. In 1180 Otto I Wittelsbach became the Duke of Bavaria and Munich was handed to the Bishop of Freising before being given back to Otto II Wittlesbach in 1240. In 1250 the Duchy of Bavaria was divided into two with Munich becoming part of Upper Bavaria. Duke Louis IV was elected German King in 1314 then Holy Roman Emperor in 1328 and strengthened the city’s standing by guaranteeing it additional income by granting it the salt monopoly. During the late 15th century the city underwent a gothic arts revival and saw the construction of the famous Frauenkirche in just 20 years. 1506 saw Bavaria reunite with Munich as the capital and retain the title in 1806 when the new Kingdom of Bavaria was established. Under Prince Regent Luitpold the city experienced remarkable artistic and cultural achievements which made way for Munich’s famous museums and galleries. Munich today is the third largest city in Germany and an important hub for business and tourism.
