Manchester Apartment Types

Manchester is a diverse and fascinating city, often seen as the capital of the North of England. Although this title is entirely unofficial, and the cause of some debate with proud residents of other Northern cities, it is certainly an influential city and a popular destination for many visitors.

History

In the Castlefields area, modern visitors are able to see the remains of the Roman fort Mamucium, evidence of Manchester's earliest beginnings. The early town grew up in the thirteenth century, but really built its fortune with the Industrial Revolution of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when it became one of the first modern cities. The imposing cotton mills and warehouses of this era created a striking industrial landscape, which is still a grand part of the modern city- even though many of them now house stylish Manchester apartments. In the twentieth and twenty first centuries, Manchester has developed into a thoroughly modern city, often voted as one of the best places in Europe to do business, exceptionally popular with tourists, home to two universities and famed worldwide for its sporting excellence and thriving music scene.

Getting In & Getting Around

Manchester International Airport is the largest UK airport outside of the capital, with nearly a hundred operators flying to and from hundreds of worldwide destinations. From the airport, you can easily reach the city centre by train, coach or taxi. The city has two major railway stations, Victoria and Piccadilly, with most national services running to Piccadilly. Once in the city centre, you will find a comprehensive public transport system including buses, trams and local train services, making it easy to get around and putting the entire city within easy reach of your Manchester accommodation. Driving your own car, as in many cities, can mean dealing with a lot of traffic, and car parking can be expensive, but there are plenty of multi-storey car parks available in convenient areas.

Culture, Sights & Attractions

Old TraffordManchester is a very cultural city, offering a wide range of museums, galleries, theatres and concert venues. Cultural highlights include The Lowry, which houses a collection of the famous painter's works and two theatres, the Bridgewater Hall, home to the Hallé Orchestra, and the Imperial War Museum North. Large concerts, ranging from Madonna to Metallica, Cirque de Soleil to Eddie Izzard, are hosted by the MEN Arena, with many similar events at the Manchester Apollo. Sights not to miss include the Manchester Wheel, a great way to see the city from a different angle, Chinatown, and the great sporting locations; Old Trafford, home to Manchester United Football Club and Lancashire Country Cricket Club, and Sportcity, where the 2002 Commonwealth Games were hosted and now home to Manchester City Football Club. Manchester apartments also provide a great base for exploring the great shopping in the area, whether you explore the boutiques, high street stores and alternative outlets in the city centre or head out to the Lowry Outlet Mall for a bargain, or to the Trafford Centre, a large indoor shopping centre so popular it's almost a tourist attraction in its own right.

Eating Out

As a thriving cosmopolitan city, Manchester offers a wide and fantastically diverse range of restaurants, providing an excellent choice for the days when you don't feel like cooking up a storm in your Manchester accommodation. Chinatown offers a range of cuisine, from great value all-you-can-eat buffets to the acclaimed Yang Sing restaurant, reputed to be the best Chinese restaurant in Europe. For Indian food, try Wilmslow Road in the Rusholme area, dubbed the Curry Mile because of the vast array of curry houses anad kebab shops. The city centre itself offers a wide range, too, with every cuisine you can imagine, from Armenien to Greek, Spanish to Japanese, represented.

Outside The City

The Peak DistrictA city stay need not, of course, be purely about the city centre. Visitors to Manchester can easily take a trip to the seaside, with the bright lights of Blackpool and the more refined tea rooms of Southport only an hour away. The picturesque Peak District, England's first National Park, stretches away east of the city, offering beautiful landscapes of rolling hills and pretty villages and towns. For committed city lovers, Liverpool and beautiful Chester are also within easy reach.
