London, the capital of the United Kingdom, is a fascinating historical yet modern city. Visited by millions of tourists each year - making it one of the most visited cities of the world - it's also a global financial centre and an influential political and commercial force.

History

The first major settlement of London was founded by the Romans in 43 A.D. and called Londinium. Less than twenty years later, it was famously burned to the ground by the Iceni tribe led by Queen Boudicca. The Romans returned, of course, and planned the next settlement more thoroughly, setting the earliest foundations of the city we see today. After the Norman Conquest in 1066, London became the residence of the King and the seat of government. The city grew steadily from then on; the Great Fire in 1666 allowed for structural improvements to be made, widening streets and replacing wooden buildings with brick and stone. During the Victorian era, it was the largest city in the world. These days, it's a modern "Global City", a popular destination for tourists and a diverse, vibrant home to millions of residents.
