Liverpool is a historic and cultural port city, famous for its vibrant music scene, lively nightlife and sporting passions. It's a popular city for tourists from around the world, often voted one of the best UK city break destinations.

History

King John announced the foundation of the borough of Liverpool in 1207, but it remained a small settlement until the seventeenth century. The first cargo from the Americas arrived in Liverpool's docks in 1648, and shortly afterwards the city gained separate customs authority from Chester, setting the scene for a dramatic increase in international trade, the expansion of the docks and an accompanying population growth. In the twentieth century, Liverpool became famous as the home of the popular sixties Merseybeat music scene, headed by The Beatles.
