Leeds Apartment Types

Leeds is an attractive Northern city, famed for its great shopping, culture and entertainment. It's also the UK's largest centre for business and financial services outside London, and has been voted the best English city to visit outside the capital.

History

Although mentioned in the Domesday Book, Leeds was a relatively minor settlement for many centuries. During the Middle Ages and the Tudor period, it grew on the strength of the wool trade to become a solid and pretty trading town, but it wasn't until the Industrial Revolution that it really bloomed. With the arrival of canals and railways, bringing a wide range of industries including textiles, chemicals, leather and pottery, Leeds grew radically, and was granted city status in 1893. In the 20th century, it gained two universities, and new industries such as retail and media thrived. It's now one of England's core cities, the economic heart of the region and a popular destination for a city break.

Getting In & Getting Around

Leeds-Bradford International Airport is just ten miles from the city centre, serving a number of mostly European destinations. Manchester Airport is also within easy reach, approximately an hour and a half away by train. The main railway station - one of the largest in the country -offers regular services to destinations all over the United Kingdom. Leeds is well connected by road, with the M1 and M62 motorways nearby. Once in the city, the centre is fairly compact and easy to get around on foot, or you can take advantage of the frequent bus services or take a taxi. Like many major cities, you may find this easier than driving - consider leaving the car at your Leeds accommodation.
