Hannover – one of the wealthiest cities in Germany and the capital of Lower Saxony, is a popular destination with city breakers, fair goers and tourists alike.

History

The city we know today was originally founded on the south bank of the River Leine during medieval times with the original name Honovere. This small village soon grew into a large town by the 13th century thanks to its position at a natural crossroads and acted as a gateway to the Rhine, Ruhr and Saar river valleys. In the 14th century the city wall and three city gates were built and a period of industrialisation began. In 1636 George, Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg, moved his residence to Hannover the later Hanoverian King George I also became the British king. The city was annexed by Prussia in 1866, a move which meant an improvement in business. The mid to late 19th century saw a number of important inventions in the city including the horse railway, electric tram and gramophone. Today Hannover is a the capital of Lower Saxony, a major city in Germany and host to a number of world trade fairs and exhibits including the annual CeBIT computer show.
