Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland, a thriving cultural city which is one of the most visited destinations in the United Kingdom. As well as attracting tourists, it's one of Europe's top twenty financial centres and home to many of Scotland's leading businesses.

History

Glasgow was founded by the Christian Saint Mungo in the sixth century, when he set up a church on the spot now occupied by Glasgow Cathedral. By the twelfth century, it had become a city with the cathedral built in stone. The University of Glasgow was founded by papal bull in 1451, and by the sixteenth century Glasgow was recognised as an important religious and academic centre. The River Clyde made the city a significant trading centre, allowing the import of tobacco, cotton and sugar from across the Atlantic, and with the Industrial Revolution Glasgow's trade and industry combined to make it one of the richest cities in the world at the end of the Victorian era. Although traditional industries declined in  the twentieth century, the city has undergone regeneration in the last few decades to create a thriving modern city.
