As the transport hub of Germany, the financial powerhouse of Europe and the trade fair capital of the world, Frankfurt is a an incredibly popular destination with all kinds of travellers from all corners of the globe.

History

Originally established as a Stone Age settlement in the late 700s the area soon developed into a garrison town during Roman times. Frankfurt was one of the most important cities in the Holy Roman Empire with it being declared as a Reichsstadt (Imperial City) in 1372 giving it direct links with the Holy Roman Emperor. From 855 German kings and emperors were elected in Frankfurt and crowned in Aachen then from 1152 Frankfurt was the sole site for the election and coronation of all German kings. Its market flourished and so did its standing as a trade city by the time the Frankfurter Messe (Frankfurt Trade Fair), the first ever fair to be held in the city, was held in 1150. By the time of the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire in 1792 the Frankfurt region was under French control. In 1848 the city held Germany’s first ever parliamentary delegation at the Paulskirche cathedral. Frankfurt today is one of the largest cities in Germany, the financial and transportation hub of the country and the largest financial centre of continental Europe.
