Edinburgh is a strikingly attractive city and the capital of Scotland. Famed worldwide for the annual Festival, it's a popular destination throughout the year and has been voted the most desirable UK city to live in.
History
The city has a long and venerable history, with evidence of settlement as far back as the Iron and Bronze Ages. For the early Anglo Saxon kings, Castle Rock was a natural place to set up a fortress, and after the Scots regained control of the area, a town grew up around the castle in the 12th century. Edinburgh and the surrounding area were claimed by both England and Scotland for many years, until the 15th Century when the Royal Court was moved to Edinburgh, making it Scotland's capital. Later, in the 18th Century, the city was a centre for the Age of Enlightenment; it was during this period that the New Town was built, a masterpiece of city planning which created the beautiful city we see today.

Getting In & Getting Around
Edinburgh International Airport is about ten miles west of the city, with a dedicated airport bus service running into the city centre. The main railway station, Waverley Station, is a major hub for the national rail system, with services throughout the area and to major destinations including London and Birmingham. Because of the Old Town's medieval layout, driving is not always easy, but it's easy to get around on foot, since the city is compact - however be warned, it's also quite hilly. There are frequent buses throughout the area, and you can usually find a black cab to hail on the street close to your Edinburgh accommodation.
Culture, Sights & Attractions
Think of Edinburgh and you'll probably think of the famous Festival. Taking place every August, with enough visitors to double the city's population, it's actually a number of simultaneous arts and cultural festivals. The most famous of these are the Edinburgh Fringe, the International Festival and the Military Tattoo. Outside festival season, this fascinating city still provides plenty to see and do within easy reach of our Edinburgh apartments- Edinburgh Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the medieval Mary King's Close and the Royal Yacht Britannia are just a few. Calton Hill, with the National Monument at the top, is also a venue for many events - including the Beltane Fire Festival at the end of April each year. Families should not miss a trip to Edinburgh Zoo, where you can see the penguins on parade.
Eating Out
There's plenty of choice for eating out around Edinburgh. Seafood aficionados should head towards Leith, the port district, where you'll find an array of restaurants offering great, fresh food. For a real treat, the city offers a select choice of Michelin starred restaurants. Of course, for a real taste of Scotland, there's a range of pubs serving traditional dishes like "Haggis, Neeps and Tatties", or you can get traditional fish and chips from a chippy and enjoy them in the comfort of your Edinburgh accommodation.
Outside The City
Outside the city, the beautiful Scottish countryside offers a range of delights. Picturesque villages, rolling green countryside and ancient castles await, just a short drive from our Edinburgh apartments. St Andrews, an ancient university town famous as the home of golf, is approximately an hour and a half's drive away.
