Cardiff is a striking, modern and vibrant capital city, home to the National Assembly for Wales (the Senedd). Once an industrial port town, it's now a lively and popular tourist destination.
History
Archaeological evidence from around Cardiff indicates that the area has been inhabited for many centuries - since Neolithic times. The name Cardiff, meaning "The fort on the Taff", relates to Roman times, when a Roman fort and accompanying civilian settlement was established there. After the Romans left in the 4th century, little is recorded about Cardiff- the settlement may even have been abandoned entirely - until the Norman conquest, when Cardiff Castle was built. Cardiff remained a relatively small town for many years, but grew rapidly from the 1830s onwards, thanks to the newly built docks which made it a major port. Cardiff was granted city status in 1905, and was proclaimed the capital of Wales in 1955, and has since undergone further regeneration to create a truly modern and vibrant city.
