Berlin Apartment Types

Berlin – the capital of Germany and one of the largest cities in Europe – is an immensely popular destination, home to some of the most fascinating culture, magnificent architecture and vibrant business centres in the world.

History

First documented in the thirteenth century, the two cities of Cölln and Berlin were an economic and social unit before uniting politically in 1307 and later become known simply as Berlin. Berlin successively became the centre of the Enlightenment in 1704 then the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia between 1701 and 1918, the German Empire between 1871 and 1918, the Weimar Republic from 1919 to 1933 and the Third Reich between 1933 and 1945. The Industrial Revolution transformed Berlin during the 19th century with the city’s economy and population expanding dramatically making the city become the rail and economic hub of Germany. In 1920 the Greater Berliner Act united dozens of suburban cities and villages around Berlin and saw the city expand greatly. Following WWII Berlin, and Germany, were divided into four sections. 1961 saw the construction of the Berlin Wall which completely separated the city into East and West Berlin. On the 9th November 1989 following great pressure from the East German population the Berlin Wall was demolished which led to the reunification of Germany on 3rd October 1990 and the formation of the Federal Republic of Germany with Berlin as its capital. Berlin today is the capital of Germany, a modern metropolis and a major centre of culture, politics, media and science in Europe.
